Exchange 2010 SP1: Error when adding or removing a mailbox database copy

If an Exchange 2010 RTM server an Exchange 2010 SP1 Beta has been upgraded to Exchange 2010 SP1 RTM administrators may experience an error when attempting to utilize the remove-mailboxdatabasecopy add-mailboxdatabasecopy commandlets.

When running remove-mailboxdatabasecopy the following error is noted:

WARNING: An unexpected error has occurred and a Watson dump is being generated: Registry key has subkeys and recursive removes are not supported by this method.

Although the error is reported, the remove was successful in updating the database object within the active directory to show the server no longer hosts a copy of the database. You can verify the copy was successfully removed by reviewing the Servers with the get-mailboxdatabase –identity | fl name, servers commandlet.

Here is sample output (note DAG-2 is missing):

If an administrator attempts to add a database copy to a DAG member, the same error may also be returned.

Unlike the remove-mailboxdatabasecopy this command is not successful in adding the copy updating the Active Directory to show the copy was added.

To work around this issue the administrator should:

1) Identify the GUID of the database that is being added.

2) On the server specified in the add command, using the database GUID identified, remove the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\ExchangeServer\v14\Replay\State\{DB-GUID}\DumpsterInfo

To identify the mailbox database GUID, use the following command:

[PS] D:\>Get-MailboxDatabase DAG-DB0 | fl name,GUID

Name : DAG-DB0
Guid : 8d3a9778-851c-40a4-91af-65a2c487b4cc

The GUID identified in this case is 8d3a9778-851c-40a4-91af-65a2c487b4cc. With this information we can no export and delete the DUMPSTERINFO key on the server where you are attempting to add the mailbox database copy.

Move the Active Mailbox Database

Moving the active mailbox database is the process of designating a specific passive copy as the new active copy of a mailbox database. This process is referred to as a database switchover. A database switchover involves dismounting the current active database and mounting the database copy on the specified server as the new active mailbox database copy. The database copy that will become the active mailbox database must be healthy and current. Here are three scenario:

In this example, a copy of the database DB4 hosted on MBX3 is activated and mounted as the new active mailbox database. This command makes DB4 the new active mailbox database and it doesn’t override the database mount dial settings on MBX3.

Move-ActiveMailboxDatabase DB4 -ActivateOnServer MBX3 -MountDialOverride:None

In this example, the database copy on MBX6 has a ContentIndexState of Failed. As a result, the SkipClientExperienceChecks parameter mustbe specified to activate the database copy on MBX6.

Move-ActiveMailboxDatabase DB5 MBX6 -SkipClientExperienceChecks

In this example, the database copy on MBX5 has a replay queue greater than 6. As a result, the SkipLagChecks parameter must be specified to activate the database copy on MBX5.

Move-ActiveMailboxDatabase DB4 MBX5 -SkipLagChecks

First to turn oon the out of office for the user account “Picsou”, run

Second, You want to change the actual out of office message (internal and external)

Delete a disconnected mailbox from exchange 2010

As you probably already know in Exchange 2010 the Purge option disappeared and there is no easy way to remove a disconnected mailbox from the exchange 2010 server.

First you will need to clean the database so all disconnected mailbox are tagged correctly (at this point you will see them in the Disconnect Mailbox in the GUI):

clean-mailboxdatabase “Mailbox XYZ”

You need to the the MailboxGuid to actually purge the mailbox. To get this information you should use the Exchange Management Shell. Use the following command:

Get-MailboxStatistics -Database “Mailbox XYZ” | Where-Object {$_.DisconnectDate -Notlike $NULL} | FL DisplayName, DisconnectDate, MailboxGuid

Now that you have the MailboxGuid, you can purge the mailbox by running the following command:

Remove-Mailbox -Database “Mailbox XYZ” -StoreMailboxIdentity def4aabd-2156-5857-858f-470efc3e6f28

How to do mailbox recovery in Exchange 2010

First off we need to create the Recovery Database, this is something that change from Exchange 2007; we cannot do it using the GUI anymore, also the Recovery Storage Group doesnt exist anymore and has been replaced by Database Recovery. Open a PowerShell to create a new Database that will be used for Recovery purprose:

New-MailboxDatabase -Recovery -Name RecoverDB -Server FW88 -EDBFilePath R:\Recover\RecoverDB.edb -LogFolderPath R:\Recover\Logs

Than we will need to mount it after that your Backup software has restored the database.

Mount-database RecoverDB

Here is how you would restore a mailbox after the Store has been mounted. It would restore into someone else account (or the same one) under the ‘restore’ folder:

Restore-Mailbox -RecoveryDatabase RecoverDB -Identity tweety88 -TargetFolder restored -BadItemLimit 500 -RecoveryMailbox tweety88
